Update on the support for BSC and Polygon in Erigon. Recruitment ideas.

By Alexey Akhunov·1 min read

BSC support moves to an independent project, Polygon/Bor agreement reached, and a new task-based recruitment approach using four stepping-stone projects.

BSC and Polygon in Erigon

In a previous announcement, Erigon indicated potential discontinuation of BNB Smart Chain and Bor/Polygon support due to resource constraints. The April 1st, 2023 deadline has passed, and here is the status update.

BSC Support

In Erigon v2.43.0, the BNB Smart Chain code was removed. However, this doesn't mark the end of BSC support. An independent project now maintains it: https://github.com/node-real/bsc-erigon. The team expressed optimism about this development.

Polygon/Bor Support

Following two months of discussions with Polygon, the teams "came to an agreement in principle that satisfies both Erigon and Polygon." A technical plan is being finalized to improve and stabilize Bor support in Erigon.

Recruitment Strategy

Erigon is developing a two-pronged recruitment approach to attract developers for Ethereum, Gnosis Chain, and Polygon support:

  1. Traditional assessment (CV, interviews) with limited capacity
  2. Task-based evaluation featuring real contributions with bounties for valuable work

The team proposes using four projects as "stepping stones" for new contributors:

  1. Diagnostics system (https://github.com/ledgerwatch/diagnostics) - Web server improvements, UX enhancements, diagnostics scripts
  2. Devnet tool (https://github.com/ledgerwatch/erigon/tree/devel/cmd/devnet) - Regression testing with JSON RPC API scenarios
  3. Hive tests (https://github.com/ethereum/hive) - Docker-based regression testing for Ethereum core
  4. Otterscan (https://github.com/otterscan/otterscan) - Block explorer embedded with Erigon nodes
